    Such good advice! I always put things off trying to make sure I’m doing the right thing but sometimes you just have to do something. I was thinking of focusing on a particular platform and it just occurred to me that I haven’t sold anything on that one but have made sales on another one-how silly!

    Being a professional makes it a job. Retired now, I paint for myself. Not accepting commissions, not focused on selling at all… although I get offers constantly. The joy is in the process, the variety as a plein air painter. Each time out is an exciting adventure in itself. That’s what I would suggest if one is bored. After 45 years in offices and a home studio, I found my passion again.

      I’d keep the job because it will help take your mind off the way things are going. I’m very sorry for your loss. I’d be in a terrible rut for that too! Allow yourself to accept life is messy, not perfect and challenging. Really focus you will be able to try to do a restart eventually. It’s around the corner and ask what you’d want your daughter to do if she were you. She can still be your muse. I know I’ve learned my hardest lessons from my daughter.

    Art appraisers don't ever appraise art made recently by an artist nobody knows about. It's like in music, a one hit wonder can make millions but an art canvas gets shot down every time. Makes ZERO sense.

    I have so many things i like to do that sometimes it is overwhelming when i do have time, trying to pick . And if i think TOO hard i risk doing nothing. BUT i have learned to just start on any old thing, because it doesn’t matter. Momentum will occur, it always does, especially if i have no plan. Sometimes i will pick up an old project i have set aside. Old projects are sometimes the best choice because they are often already written off, so there is zero pressure to create a masterpiece. Today i opened a mystery ziplock bag of leftover quilting scraps with some pieces already cut, but no pattern to follow, no real design. I often do that, i save interesting things, almost like a little kit, a surprise grab bag. I had forgotten how pretty the fabric scraps were. It was pure joy. I had a lot of fun practicing piecing on a machine i was unfamiliar with. I made mistakes, but i got better on the machine, i solved some riddles, and in the end, i had some success too. As the day progressed, I found myself thinking, as i busied my hands, of more creative ways to incorporate my art into my sewing. Maybe some freehand quilting? Maybe painting on fabric and using stitching overtop? Maybe stitching first and then painting over? My little brain was free as i happily stitched away. So, i had fun creating and honestly can hardly wait for morning so i can pick up where i left off. I straightened up just a wee bit, but left my six or so pretty, slightly wonky squares, all laid out on the table, with a few other bits and bobs to consider incorporating…we will see what happens. I feel like i am on a toboggan when the snow is a bit sticky and the hill isn’t very steep, but i am finally starting to slide! All because of a little treasure bag i created awhile back, and set aside for my inner artist child. Thank you Kelli for your generous and kindhearted words of wisdom and encouragement. We are listening and progress is being made. One foot in front of the other. With many small changes, we will plunge back into art!

    No offense, but I have to laugh when folks speak of composition and design as the number 1 thing to consider when painting. Value and color are number 1 and 2 respectively. Composition, or placement is important but historically speaking means nothing at times.

      Why not? What is your hobby? Why do you do it? Do I have to have a reason beyond liking color form contrast line?

    • @grandpa_eric
      @grandpa_eric Месяц назад

      @@cynthiamarston2208 Color, form, contrast, and line? Hmm. For me, I want that to represent something meaningful. All artists are different. I appreciate that. However, some 50 years ago when I was told by the dean of the school of art at ECU that with a degree in painting abstract expressionism I could work in the produce dept of a grocery store, I changed my direction in life and went to another college, an academy, a technical school with working professionals, one that taught painting realism and representational art, commercial art and illustration as well. I wanted a career in art. I wanted to learn how to use value, to see color, improve my drawing and painting skills. Anyway, I worked 45 years in the art business. Now retired, my “hobbie”is plein air painting. Geez it’s hot outside!!! Lately, I’m searching for the place where it all happens. Where I can release my mind, find the energy to abstract that color, form, contrast and line into a worthy effort. What makes it so? It could be something ordinary. But the question of why we put paint on a brush and apply it in a certain manner to a substrate is something personal to me and you. Usually, not until time has passed, can I step back and ask why I chose to paint something. Does that explain my comment?

    One instructor required 25 sketches a week. I remember getting some in while falling asleep while doing it because of how it became harder to get done if I got behind. Same with scooping horse poop daily. Put it off it becomes overwhelming! Also with progress you end up having to restart there is that time to get back some skills you acquired when on track. I believe in taking a break …..best keep it short

    Have a plan. Silence the witches. Do it. A lot easier said than done. I think over perfectionism is my albatross. It can cause paralysis.

  • @cynthiamarston2208
    @cynthiamarston2208 Месяц назад

    I have pain and some positions start to cause neck and shoulder pain! Then it stays for like 2 days. I’m getting my long time carpal tunnel and trigger fingers fixed and learned since I made the appointment that these can cause the between the shoulder blades pain. I hope that’s my fix because it’s sort of thing that causes actual aversion. Not looking for excuses because I have other things mentioned here. Mostly distractions! It would be great to have to drive a mile away to a secluded spot with a toilet and sink! No tv show calling or fridge or dogs and noisy bird who wants to know where the heck I am gone so long because I punt where the fumes won’t bother him. Yes I have a place to paint in the house but it isn’t big enough to get back from my work enough to see from say 7 feet away. It never seems large enough! If a person could treat their over perfectionism that could help. Outdoors would be nice without wind or bugs or glare or possibility of being seen. If my passion or obsession could be nurtured I feel these things might be a minor inconvenience if that makes sense. I do well in a classroom situation because they are painting too so being seen isn’t an issue and the energy is good most the time but I can still get frustrated about lighting or the window allowing me to see when it’s gloomy outside. That exacerbates a chronic depression I live with. So….a studio with no windows. The list of personal or personality or state of mind work required is long too. It’s unkind to see what a frustrated and angry person you can become over something more or less small. That hair that comes off the brush right where a delicate well done place has been achieved. Turn off phone and have a sign on front door Please do not disturb at this time. The list is getting longer!
